Dumka was originally formed in New York City in 1949 as a male chorus. The founders sought to preserve and cultivate the rich secular and religious musical heritage of Ukraine. In 1959, Dumka became a mixed chorus. In the years since, the chorus has performed concerts in Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Town Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey, the J. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and St. Patrick's Cathedral, as well as other churches. Concerts have also been performed in Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal, and in England, Austria, Germany, France and Ukraine.
Since 1991 Dumka has performed under the direction of Vasyl Hrechynsky, who was choirmaster of the Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet, and instructor of conducting at the Lviv Conservatory as well as conductor of several choirs, before coming to New York where he conducted performances at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, St. Patrick's Cathedral and other concert venues.
The Ukrainian Chorus Dumka will celebrate its 60th anniversary on March 28, 2010 with a concert at Merkin Hall in New York City.
