Good Friday Service

Hundreds of Roses decorated tomb on Good Friday Services in Perth Amboy, NJ.
This year, the parishioners of Assumption Catholic Church, the religious Sisters and the students of our parish, Assumption Catholic School, participated in a moving service called Solemn Vespers with the Burial Procession, bearing the Holy Shroud, or Plaschanytsia.
The Plaschanytsia is the linen shroud in which Jesus was wrapped after His death and placed in the tomb. The tomb holds a symbolic representation of Christ after the Crucifixion and, for the first time, was decorated exclusively with over 600 white roses donated and purchased by our parishioners.  It was especially moving to witness the faithful bringing flowers for the Lord, as each rose represents someone’s prayer, someone’s gratitude, a tear or a smile, a heartfelt request, and a gesture of love for the Lord.
During the procession, members of the parish’s Holy Name Society carried the Holy Shroud, while altar servers carried lighted candles and wooden clappers. The schoolgirls were dressed in white dresses, representing the Myrrh-bearing women who brought myrrh (holy oil) to the tomb of Jesus.
As a show of devotion and adoration, the faithful approach the Plaschanytsia on their knees, make the Sign of the Cross, and venerate the five wounds of Christ depicted on the Holy Shroud.
