A New Year for Our Ladies at Assumption Parish

We warmly welcome back all the members of our St. Ann’s Society, as they resume their activities for our parish in this New Church Year. Before the summer break, the president of St. Ann’s Society, Mrs. Melanie Fedynyshyn presented pastor Fr. Ivan Turyk with a check for the church in the amount $10,000 from their fundraising activities. The ladies had their first meeting last Tuesday on which they discussed the plans for the upcoming year and especially for the Calendar Dinner Dance that will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are sold at $35 each and are available to purchase after Liturgies  or in our parish  office. We all wish our St. Ann’s Society a very blessed and productive year ahead, with prayers and hopes that more women of our parish will join their ranks. May the Good Lord hear and answer our prayers!

Cherished Priest Celebrates 50th Jubilee

Sunday, April 19 was a special day of thanks for the Assumption of the BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church in Perth Amboy, NJ as we celebrated the Liturgy honoring the 50th Anniversary of the ordination of our former Pastor Father Roman Dubitsky. The Principal Celebrant of the Liturgy was Fr. Roman and concelebrants were our current Pastor Fr. Ivan Turyk and homilist Very Rev. Andriy Rabiy, Protosyncellus of Philadelphia Archeparchy and Pastor of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Reading, PA. In addition to hundreds of parishioners from the Assumption Parish, the Liturgy was attended by many former parishioners of Fr. Roman from St. Stephen Church in Toms River, NJ and St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Wilmington Delaware. The reception and a concert following the Liturgy in the school hall was attended by three hundred fifty well-wishers who enjoyed a great program prepared by the school and parish kids and a variety of refreshments at the parish annual Easter Dinner-Sviachene. The capacity crowd in attendance for his Jubilee Liturgy and the hundreds of guests at the reception were witness to the love and admiration that the community has for Fr. Roman. Although Fr. Roman has accomplished so much over the years, he said that the spotlight shouldn’t be on him, “It’s a day for me to thank all of you for allowing me to answer the call to service to God and His Church on earth.” Among the letters and testimonials read in connection with that occasion was a very special greeting for Fr. Roman from His Grace Archbishop-Metropolitan Stefan Soroka of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Once again sincere thanks to all who helped organize this wonderful celebration for a very devoted priest and to share that Easter joy with one another!

Palm Sunday at Assumption Church in Perth Amboy, NJ.

On Palm Sunday, Assumption Parish   was blessed by a visit from Bishop Hryhoriy Komar, Auxiliary Bishop of Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy in Ukraine. The parish priest Rev. Ivan Turyk welcomed  the Bishop  at the entrance of the Church followed by the  parish children who greeted  Him  with the traditional bread and salt and beautiful flower bouquets.  The bread represents the warmth of Ukrainian hospitality from the rich black fertile soil of Ukraine. The salt symbolizes friendship, an eternal friendship that will never sour because salt is never corrupted by time therefore, never loses its taste. His Grace  led the faithful in the celebration of Divine Liturgy and blessing of the willow branches.  The Divine Liturgy was beautifully celebrated with responses sung by the parsh choir “Boyan”  under the direction of Mrs. Alla Korostil.  In his homily, Bishop Komar  spoke of the shadow of the cross that  hung   over Jesus as he journeyed  to Jerusalem. He also asked for prayers for peace in Ukraine and especially for all who have suffered greatly in a recent war.
