Our traditional, annual Memorial Day service was held at the parish cemetery on Monday morning, May 31.
 
The ceremony started at the Veterans Monument honoring the twelve parishioners who died serving our country in WWI and WWII. Following next was a panakhyda at the cemetery circle, the site of the Shrine of the Resurrection of Christ, and then at the grave of former Assistant Pastor Father Dmytro Fedasiuk.
 
The service concluded with taps performed by parishioner, US Army Sergeant First Class John Grausam.
 
To our dear veterans who have passed away, especially those who died in action, we say, "Vichnaya Pahmyat – Eternal Memory."

Saint George Ukrainian Catholic Church in New York City recently held it's 34th annual Ukrainian Festival on May 14 – 16, 2010.
 
This year parishioners from our parish participated and performed at the festival.
 
Our parish's newly formed youth dance group Veselka under the artistic leadership of Nadiya Lemega performed a dance titled "Веселка" on Saturday, May 15th. Nadiya Lemega is also the director of the dance group Chervona Kalyna from Jersey City NJ that performed at the festival on Saturday.
 
On Sunday, May 16th, soloist/violinist Ksenia Iavorska performed the following songs – “А Калина Не Верба” and “Піду За Тобою.”

The month of June is devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
 
Moleben's will be sung on Thursdays in June at 7 PM.

Beginning June 6 (first Sunday in June), the summer liturgy schedule will go into effect.
On Sundays both liturgies will be one half hour earlier, 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM.
The Saturday evening liturgy will stay at 5:00 PM.
 
This schedule is in effect for the months of June, July and August.…

The Holy Name Society will once again assist with the caring placement of some 350 flags on our parish veteran's graves.

On Memorial Day, May 31, our traditional visit to the cemetery will take place. Requiem services, with panachydas on individual graves, will follow the 9:30 a.m. American-Ukrainian Veterans Service.

On Sunday, May 23, 2010, newly ordained Father Paul J. Makar celebrated his first Divine Liturgy here in Perth Amboy at 12 noon. Former pastor, retired Archbishop Stephen Sulyk along with guest priests took part in the Divine Liturgy. The church was filled with over 340 people as relatives, friends, guests, and parishioners gathered to celebrate in this special occasion. Inside the church, extra chairs were set up behind the pews in back, and still many people were standing. At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Father Paul gave his blessing to everyone in attendance.
 
After the Divine liturgy a banquet with approximately 320 guests was held in Father Paul's honor at the parish school's hall. Buffet dishes included pork loin, BBQ chicken, broiled salmon, salmon florentine, pyrohy/varenyky (kapusta and potato), holubchi, roasted potato's, mixed vegetables, fresh kapusta salad, and homemade desserts. All of the dishes were homemade by the parish's Zabava Committee. A short musical performance was done by the parish school Chimetteers.
 
The Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish offers our joyous wishes to Father Paul J. Makar!

We were blessed with the ordination of Deacon Paul J. Makar to the Priesthood on Sunday, May 16, 2010.
 
He was ordained by His Grace, Metropolitan Stefan at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia.
 
May God grant him many years of health and service to the People of God!

St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church, located on 7th Street in the East Village neighborhood in Manhattan, has a new neighbor. Cooper Union college has built its modernistic, state-of-the-art New Academic Building on the once-vacant lot across Taras Shevchenko Place.
 
The photo shows the new Cooper Union building with Saint George Church, large itself, dwarfed to its side.
 
Love it or hate it, it's their new neighbor.

We came across a neat blog on the Ukrainian Museum in Manhattan.  
 
The museum is located in the old Ukrainian neighborhood at 222 East 6th Street. That's around the corner from St. George's Ukrainian Church and the Surma Ukrainian Shop.  It is also close to the Veselka Restaurant and Stage Diner on 2nd Avenue, both of which serve great Ukrainian food.
 
The museum's impressive new building was opened in 2005.
 
If you haven't been there yet, it's worth a trip the next time you are in Manhattan, or if you attend the 7th Street Festival held one block over every May.
