Our parishioner Sub-deacon Paul J. Makar was ordained a deacon on Pentecost Sunday, May 31 2009. Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka performed the ordination in our parish church at the 10 AM Divine Liturgy with our Choir "Boyan" singing the responses. After the diaconal ordination a luncheon was held in his honor at the school auditorium with approximately 250 attendees. Joyce Adamshick and her hard working volunteer kitchen crew provided an excellent buffet of sausage with peppers, baked BBQ chicken, baked ziti, potato salad, cold-cuts, and salad. A wide variety of homemade pastries, cookies, and cakes were served for dessert.
Deacon Paul J. is assigned to Reading PA where he will begin his Clinical Pastoral Education at Reading Hospital, School of Health Science. In the fall he will return to St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic seminary to attend his final year at The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington DC.
He has proudly followed in the footsteps of his father, Deacon Paul Makar Jr. who has been assigned to our parish since his ordination in 1987. May God grant Deacon Paul J. many more blessings as he continues his final studies for the priesthood.
Congratulations!

Our traditional, annual Memorial Day service was held at the parish cemetery on Florida Grove Road in Hopelawn, NJ on Monday morning, May 25. The American-Ukrainian Veterans began the ceremony with the placement of wreaths near the Veterans Monument honoring the twelve parishioners who died serving our country in WWI and WWII. Following was panakhyda at the cemetery circle, the site of the Shrine of the Resurrection of Christ, the Veteran's Monument and the grave of former Assistant Pastor Father Dmytro Fedasiuk. The service concluded with taps performed by parishioner, US Army Sergeant First Class John Grausam.
The American-Ukrainian Veterans along with the Holy Name Society recently donated funds for the renovation of the cemetery circle area. The landscaping improvements were completed by MCB Landscaping in time for the Memorial Day services so that attendees could see and appreciate the improvements. The Holy Name Society recently refitted the circle's flag poles so that the American and Ukrainian flags can be proudly displayed.
To our dear veterans who have passed away, especially those who died in action, we say, "Vichnaya Pahmyat – Eternal Memory."

Our parish sponsored a Spring Zabava which was held on Saturday, May 9 in the school auditorium. Some 150 attendees enjoyed a fantastic home-style buffet which included stuffed cabbage, chicken cutlets, salmon stuffed with scallops, varenyky/pyrohy, and more. For dessert, there was a large assortment of homemade cakes and cookies. All of the dishes were prepared by the parish Zabava Committee.
The band "Anna-Maria Entertainment" entertained and delighted everyone with a musical mixture of Ukrainian, Pop, and Standards that kept the dance floor crowded all night long. As a treat for our parish, Roman Konstankevitch of Anna Maria Entertainment brought along a special guest, opera singer Lyudmila Fesenko.

She is an honored artist from Ukraine, and a long-time lead performer at both the Kyiv State Operetta Theatre and Kyiv National Opera House. Ms Fesenko has also performed solo concerts in Avery Fisher Hall and Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. Those in attendance thoroughly enjoyed her beautiful voice.
Once again, our parish has sponsored a successful and fun-filled Zabava for parishioners and welcomed guests to enjoy.
