Easter Dinner “Sviachene”

The traditional Easter Dinner "Sviachene" will be held on Sunday, April 26. Parishioners and friends are invited to share this special occasion. Tickets will be on sale starting Saturday, April 4 between Sunday liturgies, before the Saturday evening liturgy, or at the rectory during the week. Seating is reserved when tickets are purchased. Donation is $17 for adults and $10 for child or student.

There are only a few weeks until the Sviachene!  Our schoolchildren will be performing, as well as The Nadiya Dancers!…

Deaconate Ordination Set

Our parishioner seminarian, currently Sub-deacon Paul J. Makar, is scheduled to be ordained to the diaconate on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009, here in our parish. All are invited to attend the liturgy and proudly see our seminarian ordained a deacon.

Paul, who is currently studying for the priesthood at Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC, was ordained in November here in his home parish to the Catholic order of subdiaconate.

Paul, 36, has a degree in Maritime Engineering from SUNY and spent five years in the US Navy. He was released from active duty in 1999 with the rank of lieutenant. He later worked as an engineer and served in the Navy Reserves. In 2004 he felt a calling to the priesthood and entered St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington, DC.…

Two Parishioner Youth are Fiddling

Two parishioner youth who are ACS graduates have roles in the musical, "Fiddler on the Roof" with the St. Joseph High School Theatre Company. This classic drama is set in Russia about 100 years ago.  The actors are sisters -Jessica, ACS '06 and Marisa, ACS '08.

Evening performances are: April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25 at 7:30 PM. A Sunday matinee is April 19 at 3 PM. The St. Joseph Theatre is behind the main school building at 145 Plainfield Ave., Metuchen, NJ. Tickets are available at the door.

Relic of Blessed Martyr Vasyl Velychkovsky

A reliquary with a relic of the Blessed Martyr Vasyl Velychkovsky is on display on the side altar beneath the icon of the Blessed Mother, for veneration by the faithful.  Anyone who wishes to do so may pray by the side altar before or after liturgy to petition Blessed Vasyl for special favors.

Metropolitan Andrey – The Film

The film, “Metropolitan Andrey” will be shown on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 3 PM in our school auditorium at the corner of Meredith and Jacques Streets.  The film is in Ukrainian with English subtitles.  Donation is $10.

Family Bowling

The Holy Name Society is sponsoring Family Bowling on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the Majestic Lanes in Hopelawn. Bowling will begin at 1 PM. The fee of $20 per person includes two hours of bowling and shoe rental. Refreshments and prizes will follow at the school auditorium. The Holy Season of Lent Begins

The Holy Great Fast, or Lent, the season of spiritual renewal and reconciliation of God and man, begins on Monday, February 23 for Eastern Rite Catholics.
 
Fasting Laws
The first day of Lent and Good Friday, all persons 14 years of age and over are obliged to abstain from meat and dairy products.  On all Fridays of Lent and Holy Saturday, meat may not be eaten.  Anyone who performs hard manual labor, the sick, pregnant and nursing mothers, are exempt.
 
Our Parish's Lenten Services
Stations of the Cross:  Wednesdays at 6:30 PM.
Sorokousty: Liturgy and Lenten Commemoration of the Dead, Thursdays at 6:30 PM, except for Friday March 13.
    
Reconciliation
Every Christian has an obligation in conscience to be reconciled with God by means of the Sacrament of Confession at least once a year at Easter time.  This period starts with the beginning of Holy Lent and lasts until Ascension Thursday. On Saturday, March 14 there will be special confessions, with a visiting priest, from 1 to 3 PM – in English or Ukrainian.…

Lenten Fish Buffet

The Holy Name Society will have its annual Lenten Fish Buffet Dinner featuring broiled fish, pyrohy, borscht, potato pancakes, halushki, macaroni and cheese, beverages, salad, and dessert on Saturday, March 21 from 4 to 7:30 PM.

Price is $9 for adults and $2 for children under 12.

Choir “Boyan” Performs in Philadelphia

Our fine parish choir performed in The Festival of Ukrainian Christmas Carols held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia on January 11, 2009.  There were also performances by choirs from Philadelphia, Trenton, Passaic, New Brunswick, and a Children's Vertep from Melrose Park, PA.
