Pysanky Writing Video

Rev. Dr. Paul Luniw, pastor of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Terryville, CT, is known as a fine pysanky writer.  Attached is a well-crafted, short video about the history and creation of pysanky.  Father Paul, of Ukrainian background, was born and raised in England and currently serves in the Stamford Eparchy.

The egg has been a symbol of life in the Ukraine and other Slavic countries since ancient times. It was customary to give decorated eggs denoting stages of life in the spring.  Colorful symbols representing nature and passed from mother to daughter enlivened the surfaces of eggs called pysanky.

Our parish also has fine pysanky artists, as was witnessed at the recent pysanky demonstration that was held by the parish St. Ann's Society.

It is heartwarming to see this ancient tradition being kept alive.

We hope you enjoy the video.

The Easter Paska

We came across an article from the "Journal of The Ukrainian Cultural Institute" of North Dakota.

The article explains the rich history and symbolism associated with Ukrainian Paska bread throughout the ages.

Enjoy!

Census 2010 Guest Speaker at Senior Citizens Club Meeting

The Senior Citizens Club invited all parishioners to attend their meeting on Thursday, March 11 at noon. Guest speaker, Dianne Roman, Perth Amboy's Supervisor of Senior Citizen Programs and Chairperson of Perth Amboy's Complete Count Committee gave a presentation on the importance of the Census 2010.

Facts gathered in the census help shape decisions for the rest of the decade about public health, neighborhood improvements, transportation, education, senior services and much more. It also determines the amount of state and federal funding communities receive over the course of the decade. In order for this funding allocation to be accomplished fairly and accurately, every person living in the United States must be counted on April 1, 2010.

All responses are used for statistical purposes only, and all are strictly confidential. The U.S. Census Bureau does not ask about the legal status of respondents in any of its surveys and census programs.
